Description:

’tis the season for a little high speed bush thrashing.   If you’re in the mood, we’ll meet at Tim Horton’s Westshore Center (ex Canwest Mall) at 7:45 on Saturday Dec 2.  Early start due to the short days.  GoogleMaps 48.440499, -123.510587     We’ll carpool to Sooke River Rd top parking lot from there.

Grade C2.    8 – 9hrs steady pace up & down slippery steep terrain, along the concrete flowline, and through 3 big sections of bushwacking over the 18 – 20 km route.  900m elevation change.  Probably some scrambling but no rock climbing.  We’ll pop out of the forest atop Black Bear Mtn and Emperor Mtn.   Both will have a steep bush approach, not trails.  We’ll return via Mary Vine Creek trail and possibly Flower Ridge to the flowline & down.

This is for people with some previous off trail hiking experience who enjoy maintaining a steady pace all day.  The goal is not the summits so much as to enjoy Sooke back country and to get back before dark.  Some fun!

*Each person needs their own headlamp/flashlight just in case – sorry no sharing, for safety reasons.  Depending on the speed of the group there’s no guarantee we’ll be back before dark so careful with those dinner reservations!

This is the time of year we want to take the 10 essentials seriously, including lots of energy food in case the organizer gets hungry, oops.    If this is your idea of fun, and you have previous off trail experience on trips like this then we’ll enjoy hiking with you.   Just email Gordon Kyle at    for information or to register.
 Looking forward to it,
-Gordon
