Time: All Day

Category: Mountaineering

To inquire/sign up please email Peggy Taylor at

Description: Kings Peak in a day is 1800 m of elevation gain and will involve a steep hike on a trail that could involve negotiating downed trees.  As we go higher we will be hiking onto snow and will have to watch for post-holing and as the snow firms up we will reach the meadow below the gully to the north glacier where we climb up to the col between Queens and Kings peaks and head left up to Kings Peak.  We may head up and return by the same route or an alternate route depending on snow pack conditions.  Expect an 11 – 13 hour day at a slow steady rate with minimal and efficient breaks.

Logistics: We will be driving up on Friday and arriving in daylight to camp overnight, on a hydro road that accesses the main Kings Peak trail, a bit higher up than the official trailhead, so that we can shave an hour off our day.  So participants must have a 4-wheel drive to access this starting point or be prepared to carpool/tent share/or sleep in vehicle with others, as there is little room for multiple cars/tents at this launching spot.  Good idea to only have 2 vehicles here!  We will camp here again on Saturday night after the climb or could go elsewhere if we make good time and want to switch campsites.  Further details will be provided to participants prior to trip.

Equipment: tent/sleeping bag/sleeping pad for camping; day pack, ice axe, crampons, hiking pole, helmet, waterproof boots, gaiters, warm layers/rain gear, food for the day and for camping, ten essentials.

Required experience level:  Participants must have prior experience travelling on snow, know how to self arrest with an ice axe and be comfortable on steep snow and have been on long mountaineering days before.  Determination, endurance and a great sense of adventure are a must!  If I do not know you, please be prepared to let me know in an email or phone call what your previous trip experience/courses have been.

Trip is weather dependent. Max participants 5 – 6.  Please provide us with your ACC membership number prior to the trip.

Leaders – Roger & Peggy Taylor.

(FYI – We have both done Kings Peak in a day twice before and as a backpack on the summer route.  It is a classic Vancouver Island outing if mother nature co-operates!….cross fingers for an acceptable forecast.)
