Description: The objective is to climb El Capitan Mountain, located north of Lake Cowichan. The first part of the trip involves cycling on the gradually ascending Cottonwood Main for about 6 km to bypass the gate. From there it is another approximately 7 km to the summit. Depending on the comfort levels we have the option to gain the summit via a moderate rock scramble, with moderate exposure. Alternatively, we can take a slightly easier route, which is mostly hiking (both routes are rated class 3). After traversing the summit we will come down to Lomas Lake and head back to the trail head from there. Apart from the cycling and optional rock scrambling, most of the route is easy to moderate hiking. The elevation gain is about 1050 m for the entire route. The trip will be most suitable for experienced hikers and aspiring mountaineers. Rock scrambling experience is an asset.

Notes: Conditions of the day may necessitate an alternative date or route. Required gear: mountain bike, hiking or mountain boots with good ankle support, helmet, axe, extra layers, rain gear, water, lunch, snacks, 10 essentials. Hiking poles are highly recommended. No dogs please.
