Volunteer Program Overview

The Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Island (ACCVI) relies on dedicated volunteers to maintain and manage our backcountry hut, Hišimy̓awiƛ. This program offers outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to contribute to the upkeep of this beloved shelter, while enjoying the remote beauty of the backcountry surrounding the 5040 Peak. Volunteers will assist with maintenance, cleaning, visitor support, and environmental stewardship.

Hut Custodians

  • Help guests with water, heat, electricity etc.
  • Custodians should not advise guests on route choices or risks
  • Check supplies and propane levels.
  • Check outhouse barrels and switch if required.
  • Inform guests of hut etiquette.
  • Promote Leave No Trace principles.
  • Assist with maintenance tasks and general hut facilities.

Application Submission:

Requirements

  • Current ACCVI member
  • Have completed a training session

Expectations:

  • Be an ambassador for the ACC
  • Spend at least two consecutive nights at the hut
  • Report back on conditions and issues

Volunteer Custodian Selection:

  • Applications will be reviewed by the ACCVI Hut Committee Chair and Volunteer Coordinator.

Training & Orientation:

  • Confirmed volunteers must attend an orientation session covering hut operations, safety protocols, and environmental stewardship. (Orientations are scheduled throughout the year)
  • AST1 (for winter custodians only)

Scheduling Procedures:

Shift Allocation

  • Volunteers sign up for shifts using the ACCVI’s online calendar.
  • Shifts are minimum two nights

Confirmation Process

  • Volunteers receive confirmation emails with detailed information related to their assigned shift. Volunteers to receive door code, report template link.
