November – Liz Williams climbs Erta Ale (613m) in the Danakil depression. This is a continuously active volcano in northeastern Ethiopia. Armed guards were required to accompany the party because of Eritrean rebels. It was climbed at night to best view the red-hot lava.

August 5 – Liz Williams attempts Mt. Rinjani (3726m) the highest peak on the island of Lombok in Indonesia but because of an earthquake which took out the trail didn’t quite reach the summit. She then climbed Inerie (2245m) the highest mountain on the island of Flores.
