As a requirement of one of the Terms of Union to bring British Columbia into confederation, the Dominion had to construct a railway from the West Coast and link up with the railways of central Canada.

Jeff Beddoes will tell us the story of how the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway Company (i.e. Robert Dunsmuir) came to own close to 2,000,000 acres of land along the east coast of Vancouver Island, and how most of these lands continue to remain in private hands.  This should be an interesting evening to inform and help those of us concerned with changing the status of those “darn gates”!
